Circle City Animal Allies works with local agencies toward the day when no healthy
or treatable Indianapolis dog or cat is destroyed solely because he or she does
not have a home.
The Allies is a coalition of animal welfare and animal rescue groups who are already working to control and care for the homeless or displaced population of Indianapolis’ animals through pet adoption programs and spay-neuter initiatives. Through our multi-year program, we will work together to develop creative solutions to deal with issues affecting Indianapolis’ animals while serving as the liaison between our animal care groups and the city of Indianapolis.
The Circle City Animal Allies (Allies) is developing a city-wide plan that will
fit within the Maddie's Fund model and engages the participation from the City to
support Indy’s homeless animals. Key functions of the Allies include:
Healthy (Adoptable): Animals eight weeks of age or older that at, or subsequent
to, the time the animal is impounded or otherwise taken into possession, have manifested
no sign of a behavioral or temperamental defect that could pose a health or safety
risk or otherwise make the animal unsuitable for placement as a pet, and have manifested
no sign of disease, injury, or congenital or hereditary condition that adversely
affects the health of the animal or that is likely to adversely affect the animal’s
health in the near future. These dogs and cats may be older. They may be deaf, blind,
scarred, disfigured, or disabled. They don’t have to win a beauty contest. And it
doesn’t matter how long they may spend in a shelter or how many others are the same
age, color, size, or type. As long as they are healthy, friendly pets, they’re adoptable.
Treatable: Any animal that is not adoptable (healthy) but could become adoptable (healthy) with reasonable effort. Sick, injured, traumatized, underage, and unsocialized, these animals need appropriate medical treatment, behavior modification, and/or infant housing and care before they can be placed in new, loving homes. Non-rehabilitatable: Non-rehabilitatable animals are neither adoptable (healthy) nor treatable. They include (1) dogs and cats for whom euthanasia is the most humane alternative due to disease, injury, or suffering that can’t be alleviated; (2) vicious dogs and cats, the placement of whom would constitute a danger to the public; and (3) dogs and cats who pose a public health hazard. This category does not include feral cats, as they occupy their own category. |
